Depending on time of day, cyclists can be marginalized on Jackson. Take care.

But certainly a very easy access to serious mountain bike terrain from the city.

NJ Transit out of NY Penn Station to New Brunswick, there are no bike permits, it is not an issue. Return from Trenton, on the same line out, but 3 stops further than New Brunswick.

Here we have a 750' climb on a severely eroded road/trail for mountain bike. A leaf strewn coverage could give you the illusion that the surface is rideable, while it might not be so. Falling directly on rocks beneath leaves will break the illusion with more clarity than you might want. Care must be taken. More than likely you will be walking some sections. Walking is mountain biking too!

This route is not a full destination ride as by itself it is less than 4 miles. You could hike it, but would probably just access the summit via the Appalachian Trail from 9d. This is an old carriage road, severely eroded, but a satisfying challenge on mtn bike.

Directions only are given for one way, but as it is an out and back, you will have no problem reversing the route to the start.

There are no ways to get to Black Rock Preserve on a bike without an ascent. Mtn Rd goes right for your jugulars, but it is paved. The culvert tunnel under Rt 9W at the top of Mtn Rd is the rabbit hole into this wonderland.

A bike permit is required for Black Rock Preserve.

Easy enough.

But these trails are subject to wear when wet. Your bike will pick up a heavy clay mud in the process. Before you go, check with this site to assess riding conditions: http://www.mtbnj.com/forum/threads/6-mile-run-conditions.23594/page-384

When you emerge at the far side of Six Mile Run you can take the Delaware and Raritan Canal towpath either to the right, back to New Brunswick, or left, on to Princeton or Trenton.

The simplest route in the Ride Library. And only one hill!

Note School Mtn Road access is a left on Rt 9 and a right onto the access road.

Other points of access exist: East Mtn Rd, Dicktown Rd and Wiccopee Rd. But not on this page.

This is the back door entry into Sprain Ridge Park. The formal way in is off Jackson, near the Grassy Sprain. You can access Sprain Ridge via Metro North out of Yonkers, Greystone, Tuckahoe or Bronxville but this is an easy ride north from Van Cortlandt Park.

Kind of a slog on a mtn bike, but it will get you there.

You could use this to do a loop on a road bike:

at mile 8.4 take a right onto East Shore Rd, taking you up the eastern side of Greenwood Lake

follow to Rt 17A and take a right over Hogback,

Pick up Long Meadow Road on the right before Rt 17 and follow south back to Sterling Mine Rd.

Otherwise, remember that you still have 10.5 miles to go to catch the train home at Sloatsburg after mtn biking.
